About this event

Mental Health Skills for Pediatric Primary Care: A Maryland BHIPP CME Event*

Dr. Rheanna Platt, Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist

At any given time, one in five children may have a mental health disorder. Family physicians and pediatricians are an important resource for parents and families to discuss their child's emotional development and mental health. Maryland Behavioral Health Integration in Pediatric Primary Care (BHIPP) aims to build the skills of primary care providers to identify and manage some of the most common mental health concerns. In partnership with Anne Arundel County Mental Health Agency, Inc., BHIPP is offering this free CME training talk for primary care providers in the Anne Arundel and surrounding communities.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Uncover and clarify mental health needs during regular visits
  • Positively encourage patients and their families and promote family resiliency
  • Give advice about mental health problems (including making referrals) that will be accepted and followed

Maryland Behavioral Health Integration in Pediatric Primary Care (BHIPP) is a statewide program that supports the efforts of primary care clinicians to assess and manage the mental health needs of their patients from infancy through the transition to young-adulthood. BHIPP is supported by funding from the Maryland Department of Health, Behavioral Health Administration and operates as a collaboration between the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Salisbury University and Morgan State University.

In addition to continuing education opportunities, BHIPP offers a free telephone consultation service for pediatric primary care providers. Child and adolescent mental health specialists are available at 855-MD-BHIPP Monday - Friday, 9am-5pm (except major holidays) to provide consultation in many areas of behavioral health including medication management, diagnostic issues, developmental delays, school/learning issues, autism spectrum disorders, trauma, and early childhood mental health. Our behavioral health consultant can also assist with identifying local resources, including information on wait times and accepted insurances.
